Two Rhode Island transplants have settled here in Northwest Florida on Escambia Bay. In Rhode Island, we spent most of our summers and fall days sailing the waters of Narragansett Bay, Block Island Sound and Buzzards Bay. We are so delighted to have found another Bay to enjoy.
In the top photo it's a ruffle but in the bottom view it looks like a shelf. It also looks like that tree may have been hit by lightning. Is that in your yard or from one of your outings?
Paula This is not in my yard, but was taken when I was in Ocala, actually on the grounds of the Hilton where I was staying. The tree was actually thriving. Lot's of foliage and very strong limbs.
Perhaps one of the Polypore mushrooms or shelflike mushrooms. Grow very often on rotting wood in many colours and shapes. Edible?? Perhaps;-) Happy New Year!! Posted many mushroom pictures here.. http://guildwoodvillagemushrooms.blogspot.com/

Great photo and interesting how it grows in the tree. Looks like a saw blade cutting into it.
